Course Aims

The aim of the lorry loader course is to provide candidates with the basic knowledge and practical skills involved in operating a lorry loader/HIAB to the NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) standard.

Who Attends

Potential and existing operators who have received no formal instruction and those requiring refresher training.

Course Content

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook and other sources of information, regulations and legislation applicable to the particular machine to be used
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the vehicle and loader crane and explain their functions
  • Be able to locate and identify all operating controls and explain their functions
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
  • Configure the vehicle and loader crane ready for travel
  • Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
  • Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out lifting duties
  • Correctly deploy the stabilisers according to stated manufacturer’s specifications – including differing variations of stabilisers (e.g. swing-up)
  • Comply with all requirements for rated capacity indicator / limiter or load moment indicators
  • Identify weights and centres of gravity of loads to be used
  • Carry out lifting operations using the full capabilities of the loader crane
  • Position loads accurately at designated locations including onto and from the vehicle
  • Identify, fit and remove various attachments and lifting accessories as appropriate
  • Minimise load swing and ensure load security on the vehicle
  • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Course Duration

The novice course is a 2 day course which includes training and testing. If the candidate is experienced/and or already holds a qualification on this machine, they can attend testing only or a refresher course.

Maximum Candidates

Maximum novices/refreshers: 3 candidates
Maximum experienced workers: 4 candidates

Qualifications Obtained

Candidate will gain either a 5-year NPORS Traditional Operator card or a 2-year NPORS CSCS Trained Operator card.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must have passed the CITB Health & Safety Environmental test (within the last 24 months) to gain the NPORS CSCS Trained Operator card. This is not required for a Traditional card, although can be added to the card if requested.

Additional Information

This course can be delivered onsite providing the onsite requirements are met.
