Unit 2: Signing Lighting and Guarding (operative)

The Aim of the Signing Lighting and Guarding (Operative) Course is to:

To provide the candidates with a knowledge and understanding of the legal requirements to enable them to follow the procedures for setting out Signing and Guarding of an Excavation on the Highway.

The Objectives of the Course are to enable delegates to:

  • Identify various types of signing and guarding
  • Recognise the safety procedures required
  • Assess the legal requirements

Who Should Attend The Course?

Operatives who are engaged in road works.

Signing Lighting and Guarding (Operative) Course Summary

Candidates will participate in theory lessons all of which are highlighted by the use of OHP & Videos covering;

  • New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 - Chapter 8
  • Review of the codes of practice
  • Drawing site plans
  • Notices required by Local Authorities
  • Site surveys
  • Code of Practice - safety at Street Works and Road Works
  • An introduction to the use of vehicle actuated portable traffic signals
  • Practical - Signing, Lighting and Guarding

Certification

Scottish Qualifications Authority ( SQA ) Certificate  -   Unit 2 Signing, Lighting and Guarding.

If the works do not involve breaking up the road or are works only of the type referred to in  regulation 3(2), a trained operative has a prescribed qualification if he has achieved the unit of competence set out as Unit 2.
